Hi all,
REALbasic 2007 Release 1 Pro.
Mac OS X 10.4.8
PowerBook G4 1.5GHz / 15" / SD...
Below is a stripped down version of my message telling that it is not possible
to build a Windows application with REALbasic 2007 Release 1 Pro.
The bug was too great (important) to not make some reaction, and I only get one
from a linux user (read carefully the following) and another asking himself
about a hoax or {I do not remember} Yes, he talks about a possible plugin
conflict. I do not have any plugin installed (The Plugins folder is empty).
So, I boot my PowerBook from an external HD with Mac OS 10.3.9 (used for
testings, not a regular boot disk), spend some times to get the license number
(got a bunch but not the one I want) and was able to build for Windows!
I quit, reboot on the internal HD, trash the REALbasic 2007 Release 1 folder,
mount the .dmg file, install a fresh copy, load back my project, compile for
all three Platforms and get the very same result.
No problemo, it worked once, it have to works many :)
I dropped the project under the REALbasic 2007 Release 1 located on the other
hard disk (the one who worked fine earlier) and asked for a cross compile and
this time it worked fine.
TechTool Deluxe (version 3.1.1) says nothing, Disk Utilities (Utilitaires de
disque) says not much, here's a mystery.
Another mystery is the silence from RS side. If it were me, I would ask on the
list _AND_ directly for some more informations (I have announced that I have
screen shots and Mac OS X crash report availables) before any bad guy will say:
"here, here, this software is crap" or something worst... But no, silence (and
this is the case for the last months). Even not a single word about the new
year / release (2007r1).
I knew and started to download the new release because I was seeking for it
since the end of december, then I saw the French (European ?) announcement and
then...
This is not a serious business (even if I understand religious events, XMas,
New Year, familly, new release frenzy and so on).
If I recall correctly, this is the first release that does not see an [ANN]
<place the ann text here> in the List since REALbasic 1.0 (and even well before
since I started at RB1r23, long long time ago).
To my friend who share the same experience, try to place a copy of REALbasic on
a different Hard Disk (to avoid potential trouble from your hard disk) and at
first, before a reboot, search your License Key. Then try to generate the
Windows and Mac OS X applications. Eventually, boot from a Live linux an use a
Memory Stick to store the REALbasic application (and take care of the
permissions and so on).
BTW: talking about permissions. I just have made the test to set the
permissions to the whole REALbasic 2007 Release 1 folder to read / write to
everyone, launch it and get the same trouble. The problem is elsewhere, but
where ?
Also, talking about license key: it is a true annoyance. Geoff take an eye
here, this matters. If I want to use on a client computer REALbasic to check
"in situ" or make a demonstration on its Platform (in the case I do not have a
computer with its OS), or... I have to install my license key (YOUR SOFTWARE)
on its computer / HD / Whatever...
A "simple" solution would be to allow a text file with a meaningless for the
people who do not know to contains on two lines (1st line the name, 2nd line
the license key) the sensible information located in the directory were reside
REALbasic. At launch REALbasic check this file / information and if it is not
found, make its traditional check (I do not want to know what it does in that
case).
In that case, I even can place REALbasic on a MemoryStick and execute it from
there (with the project) so YOUR SOFTWARE and MY PROJECT are not exposed in a
foreign and not authorized computer/hard disk.
The real methodology to do what I propose will be send to each user with its
license key with a special message 'bout not divulgate this, why and in all
case, it would be its license key who will be exposed...
NIH Syndrom Case ? Possible, lama?
Late breaking news:
-------------------
I am doing a copy of the correct application folder on a MemoryStick and I will
try to execute the software / load my project (the same) and try to generate
the three applications (Linux, Mac OS X and Windows). The anser is:
[it takes forever to make the copy!]
That is five minutes that the Finder tells me that the operation ends in one
minute... OK, there is a problem, the amount of copied bytes does not progress
too, but the external drive read light is flashing...
OK, there is some trouble, I restart and re-try the operation!
[Back]:
The applIcation was not copied on the MemoryStick, so I asked the Finder to
make it. I saw the x86RunHoudine.exe file (the two files) name running in the
Copy window... Good sign!
BTW: I know what happened: the tons of small .html files (LR) tooks forever to
be copied. THe copy was not crashed, but very slow (USB 2 is as fast as
480M...s) Once again, if I had the choice (and for the price paid long time
ago)... I would take a FireWire MemoryStick... using NTFS and not FAT32...
Grrrr.
OK, now everything is OK: I have a fresh copy of REALbasic 2007 Release 1 on my
MemoryStick, I have loaded my project (still the same), asked the compilation
and it goes fine. I definitely have a trouble with my hard disk. Where, how,
why ? I do not know. I have to buy another external hard disk to make my nth
backup / initialize / install Mac OS X 10.4 --> 10.4.8 (If I recall correctly,
this is the fourth time since I originally installed Mac OS X 10.4 (May 1st,
2005 or so). "Put a tiger in your motor" said the add long time ago :(
RS, the list, the trouble comes from my side (but not from me), REALbasic does
not suffer from any new illness.
Have a nice Sunday (btw, it is already Sunday past 9 minutes...).
