Right. They're rarely needed; but I've occasionally used them for a cache. The whole point of a cache is generally to improve performance, and you'll improve it more if all objects of that class use the same cache. Of course this only works as long as your cache is only needed in a single method -- as soon as you need it in more than one, you'll have to use a shared private property instead.
