IPCSocket is certainly the standard and preferred way to do it.  Why

Hmm, I don't see how RBScript would do it.  You could exchange data
with little files, or with AppleEvents (if you happen to be on a Mac),
and various other clunky ways, but nothing else as elegant as IPCSocket.
