My suggestion, in fact my experience, is to use the weight and energy of the big bulls who write first version OS as my first pass into a market. In other words, Use MS (& Apple) until you find that 3rd parties are their equal...

MS for Vista thru this year ...
Apple for *L* thru this year ....
would be the easiest way to wage the market battle ... but then I've never thought that one-size-fits-all.

Installs are a part of the Windows user... in the land of corporations, the installation, ease and reliability are must-haves on the checklist ... if it don't install, it don't deploy....

People, many on this list probably, don't/didn't like VB because of the rhetoric of DLL-HELL, which was a result of bad install/stupid deploy... Several firms created "one way" "one file" applications that bundled the dlls into the executable package, to overcome this. There were bundlers sold to VB code shops to make their app be "self contained" thereby avoiding the terror of DLL-HELL.
