Okay.

Primarily I develop in house business systems. They are single server, with between 5 and 500 (and normally a growing number) users accessing the database, all with persistent connections because any changes one user makes need to be immediately reflected in the clients other employees are using. They could be accessing it from the local LAN, through a frame relay or other WAN, Secure Tunnel or other wise externally.

MySQL give me the ability to do this for a single, one off payment of 250 Euro. No subscriptions, no other payments EVER. I don't have to consider how many people will be using my solution when I sell it, ever.

As an aside, you can also be a MySQL developer partner for 2000 Euro annually. This allows you to distribute as many installations as you like during each paid year, and those solutions will NEVER need to be licensed. Even if you choose not to renew your license, any installations you completed while your license was valid will never need to be licensed.

So you can see, because I'm serving an arbitrary (undefined) number of clients from my server, MySQL offers the better deal for me.

Yes, I like the Valentina object oriented API, but the standard RB API gives me more flexibility should I ever want to move to another back end.

I'm not bashing Valentina, I actually like it. I've just never stumbled across a situation where it would be a more simple, more cost effective solution when compared to MySQL in my line of business.

Cheers,
Tom

OK, I should have been more specific. For my purposes, Valentina is
more expensive.

All of my solutions are based on a centralised server, infinite
client premise.

MySQL can provide this for 250 Euro. As far as I can tell Valentina
costs US$1500 for the same scope of license.

If I'm wrong, please tell me, but that is how I interpret the pricing
as laid out at http://www.paradigmasoft.com/en/store/business/VSRV.

Totally wrong understanding. Tom. Valentina Developers go be VDN way.
You can get VDN subscription at low flat price and then have huge discounts.

When somebody says - I need INFINITE server usually I ask why you think so? Hot site with million hits per day, this is just 10 hits per second. :-)

Point is that exists options even more cheap than INF server.
And we see that 80% developers use NOT infinite server solutions.

This is why we have so many gradation of price for Valentina Server.

We do not want be like a Microsoft, which have simple $4999
for unlimited MS SQL Server.

Guys, we do not force and press nobody. :-)
If you like mySQL, its perfect.

IMHO, today people choose car, woman/man and DBMS by "if I like it".
:-)

I have hear so opposite opinions about "Why I like this or that DB"...

What is good for one developer, is nightmare for another:
One says - I love SQL, another says - I hate it.
One says - I love API way, aother says - I hate it.
One says I need speed at any price.
Other - I agree to be slow as tortilla but save.
