Setting the Backdrop property is a very easy way to display a picture in a Canvas or Window. But soon you want to do more, and then the Backdrop property isn't so useful. People sometimes suffer a bit of frustration in the course of figuring this out. Now, drawing a picture in the Paint event handler is also quite easy and allows you to do pretty much anything you need. But that requires a little more understanding of how REALbasic works.
