Shouldn't this work? If I set Mode = 0 and read sh.Result instead
then I do get the expected result. But it doesn't seem to work

DataAvailable has always been broken as far as I know. But you can
still read sh.Result even for an asynchronous shell.
A search for "Shell DataAvailable" in the archives indicates that
at least some people are able to use it. Does it work only on some
platforms? I'm on Mac OS X, and DataAvailable doesn't get called at
all.
We use it successfully in 7 different front-end applications.
However, I use Mode = 2 and have never tried using Async mode.
