Nothing about this decision is of benefit to the RS
community or RS itself.

I don't think closing the REAL hosted list is such a big thing. It's pretty easy
to run a independent list, and this is in fact already under way.

What I do have a hard time to swallow is a) the way it has been communicated by a marketing manager and b) the fact that they not simply close the list due to resources they want to free. They argued that the answers and knowledge on
this list are lost to those on the forum.

To me this says: We want your knowledge, your free time and help and we want that for free. But here we come and force you to give us that free gift on a channel that
we decided is best for us, not for you.

This is rather arrogant. I would even disagree with having any way for REAL to get the expertise from the new NUG list into their realm/forum. They are not helping build a community, but they try to suck the goodies our of the mailing list.

So, to me it's ok if they close the list. There are alternatives for the independent community. But then, REAL should avoid trying to steal the benefits for their own business of such a independent, not REAL-supported community . This is really a turn off.

Meaning: I don't see the need to write to Geoff. Unless they try to steal the
expertise and free time from independent community builders.

We should GPL all the messages, just like they did with the MySQL plugin...
;-)

cheers
