Actually, there is still a fairly good signal to noise ratio in the
moderated groups.  I moderate alt.computer.consultants.moderated, which
is still a great place for discussing its topic.  Unmoderated groups
generally have more problems with spam, but the severity varies quite a
bit among hierarchies and with topics.  As for trolls, a killfile is
usually sufficient.
