I simply join the string and cache it just before the operation. This would
be slightly slower the first time, of course, but not for subsequent calls
if the string has not changed. And that slight delay is still an acceptable
tradeoff considering the other speed gains.

As for the why the native strings are slower, I know what it¹s doing now.
I¹m asking why it can¹t do it differently?
