Note that just because a file has the executable bit, it's not a
guarantee that it is a valid executable.  You can give the executable
permission to any file.

The first digit corresponds with the owner; so if you own the file and the
digit is odd, the file is executable. If the second digit indicates an
executable file and you are a member of the group to which the file belongs,
you can execute it. Finally (and the easiest to check), if the last digit
indicates it is executable, then it is, plain and simple. (The last digit
corresponds to all users, or 'world'.)
