Yes I find that it uses HUGE amounts of memory during the precompile
phase, well over a gig with just 9 of the MBS plugins installed.
I have no idea what it's doing but the rest of your symptoms sound
like a classic VM thrashing scenario. My precompiling phase takes
less than 5 minutes and virtually always succeeds, on a 2 GB MacBook
Pro.
Maybe it would be worth adding more RAM as a workaround.
