The only problem with that is that topics within a series evolve, and sometimes one changes the subject name to better reflect the current topic or just to make the subject line clearer.

My suggestion would be to make it only generate a new ID if the "re:" portion of the subject was removed. If it still has an "re:" then it keeps the new post part of the old thread.
