Nope, the RFC states that email can use any number of characters per  
line less than 998.  In fact, the third paragraph states that forcing  
78 chars per line for poor mail clients that can't handle proper line  
wrap is a non-conformant situation concerning both RFC 2822 and ERFC  
2821.

Oh, and you left out the last portion or that last sentence of  
paragraph 3 that is aimed at mail client apps that can't deal with  
longer lines:

"... Again, even though this limitation is put on messages, it is  
encumbant upon implementations which display messages to handle an  
arbitrarily large number of characters in a line (certainly at least  
up to the 998 character limit) for the sake of robustness."

So, I will change my tongue in cheek query to a more straight forward
