Absolutely right Bill, look at the website and it talks about that
and going back to "first principles".

http://www.abinitio.com

Although you won't learn a great deal about the product there.

It's an Extract, Translate and Load (ETL) system, with a nice(ish)
graphical IDE.

It's super great and getting data out of your source database in
parallel streams, translating the data as you see fit with a number
powerful components and then loading it back up into a target
database (can be the same as the source or many disparate targets).

When you're trying to convert 100+ million accounts plus all their
associated records from one bespoke database system to another as
part of a "CRM" project, it comes in very handy. As long as you're
using a number of 16 way Sun E10,000 domains and have lots of money
for the licenses that is! It's great stuff, but a little pricey for
most. Oh, and you can do run of the mill daily batch and on-demand
stuff if you like, bit of a hammer to a walnut though.
