To answer your first question, icons will work for both the Mac
and Windows environment.

There are two parts to creating an icon. The first is to create
the actual image and the second part is to create a mask for the
icon. There are a lot of icon editors and other programs such as
Photoshop for creating the actual image. There are also image
libraries available that allow you instantly get an image for
icons. The tedious part of creating an icon is creating a proper
mask. Without a proper mask, even the very best icon images will
look jagged on the edges.

I wrote a program called "Mask-R-Aid" which is designed to create
proper masks. In general, it is the only program I use for icon
creation. If you have a 128x128 pixel image of your icon, you can
use Mask-R-Aid to create all the smaller size icons and masks
instantly by simply drag and dropping the image on the 128x128
image slot. With Mask-R-Aid icon creation went from a pain in the
butt to a simple one step operation. Mask-R-Aid will save you a
whole lot of time and effort.
