Greetings RBNUG - I think I have a problem. Don't have the hardware yet to check it out and I hope that someone else may have encountered this.
My application can use multiple serial ports. They connect to radio modems. The only way I have of identifying where a data stream is to go to is by the serial port "name". That is, the radio modems have no self identification. Here is what I am worried about: User assigns one USB serial port to a particular modem and another USB serial port (of the same manufacturer type) to another modem. All is fine, system works, user unhooks USB serial ports from computer (maybe because some other USB device has to be plugged in). Then, when the USB serial ports are reconnected to the computer, they are plugged into different USB ports or to the same USB ports in a different order (or perhaps even a hub when they were originally connected directly to the computer previously). What I am concerned with is the possibility that one physical USB serial port may have a different "name" than it did the first time. I hope this makes sense. Has anyone encountered a situation like this and willing to share observations?
