There was something weird with the drivers, it's better for me after
the update. I THINK that my problem had something to do with calling
the poll method to get some synchronous communications. The port
would just freeze sometimes while polling and would never transfer
any data after that. I dont know if that is the same as your problem
or not, but when I converted my app to async queues the problems went
away. I haven't tested the old version with the new drivers though.
It is definitely worth re-testing with the new drivers. I have no
fewer than 5 FTDI adaptors on my house server for various things, 4
of them talking to various RB apps I think and only 1 app, the
polling one, had any problem with it. Now they are all working fine.
Given the excellent price that these are available for and the
excellent unique ID that they come with for naming it's worth some
testing to get them to work. There are also lots of potential USB
issues that can cause driver failure. Especially on earlier Macs the
USB ports are very susceptible to induced noise. For example I had a
machine on my desk which would crash everytime the AC air handler
behind the wall in the attic would come on. The current inrush to
start the fan motor was enough to induce enough noise or voltage or
current or something into the USB bus that it would cause my keyspan
drivers to unload/load 3 or 4 times in a second which would crash the
machine quite reliably. I finally narrowed it down to a hub that was
creating a ground loop. It's evil that we have to consider these
things for USB, but we definitely do.
