Not all cables are wired the same. For instance, the DB9 cables used for some, if not all, APC UPS boxes are wired differently than standard DB9 cables. Could this mixture of cables you're using be giving you unexpected results? Could it be that the serial cable coming from the device is non-standard? If possible, try a device that you know is a standard device and which has the proper cables and see if you're still not getting the proper readings. That way you will at least know that your application is working for a standard device. You might also do some research on the device and the printer it was meant to be connected to. Sometimes you can find pin assignments for connectors or at least get some clue as to whether or not you can use standard cables or if the cables are proprietary.
