Hi Tim, Haven't got the scope out for a while. We've got a Meade ETX 105 with Autostar. Nice unit.
Our last expedition was crazy. We decided to go and have a look at McNaughts comet. It was visible here from the local football field, but we decided we would do a trip out to Mt Donna Buang, a mountain that is about 20 minutes drive from us. Being in the middle of summer at the time, the daily temperatures had been consistently nudging 44 C, so a nice evening drive would nice. With darkness due around 10:00pm we bundled the kids into the car and headed off about 9:30pm. Even though the mountain is only 20 minutes away, it takes another 30 minutes to drive up the treacherous narrow twisting road, especially with the amount of debri that was on the road too - The speed limit on this road is 100km/h! At the bottom of the mountain the temperature was an uncomfortable 26 C (9:30pm). When we got to the top, my goodness - Gale force winds and the temperature had dropped to 12 C. Brass monkeys all round! We were in T-shirts and shots. We looked at the comet for about 2.5 seconds and then ran like hell back to the car - our ears aching from the bitter cold. We had the car heater on on the trip down the mountain. Now I know why we don't get the telescope out very often - We'll leave the stargazing to the crazy people.
