As I already described, (this at least applies to the Mac), a search
window may look like a document window. But since it's not a window
which represents a document, it's not a document window. Use frame 11
for windows which do not represent a document, and use 0 for windows
which do represent a document, or should appear in the "Window" menu.
Document windows also appear in the application's dock menu, whereas
modeless windows do not.

Modeless dialogs and document windows *are not* the same thing and
although look the same now, their appearance and behavior may differ
more in the future. They use different resources in the Extras.rsrc
HIToolbox file, and *can* look different under different OS themes of
both hacked and ShapeShifter varieties.

They are different and they have different behavior, subtle as it is.
