I was having this problem constantly, too (as well as the silenced  
alerts), and a reboot seemed the only solution. But then I started  
setting iChat to "offline" before putting my MacBook to sleep and I  
haven't seen either problem even once since. So I think these audio  
issues are definitely related to sleep.
