I've got something working, and it seems to work fine for US dates. In
some brief "international" testing I noticed that most countries use a
date format with the date last, so I suspect my changes should be okay
for most of the world. If Steve is reading this thread, I'll be happy
to forward my changes to you to test it further and see if you want to
add it to your release.
