We use a standard video satellite uplink and downlink at our media
center to encode for the internet, but unless you are set up for mobile
broadcasting like our company (TV Network) I'm sure you'd have to find
something cheaper.
There is a new line of mobile phones that use a low earth orbit
satellite network and they have recently become available to the
consumer. At less than $1500 for the phone, its not too bad of a deal.
Per-minute charges aren't cheap, though.
If you are interested in higher cost solutions (or maybe need video as
well as audio), in the $20k range you can buy (and sometimes rent/lease)
an HSD satellite terminal that can push 64kbps data transfers.
http://www.gpsphones.com/satellitephones.htm is a retailer that sells
and rents phones for the Iridium network and other types of satellite
gear.
Hope that helps.. ;)

I just wanted to see if any folks had much experience with live mobile
broadcasts - while the uplink is moving.
If anyone has any recommendations on cellular vs. satellite etc... I'd
be very interested.
Some of the areas will be very rural.
Comments? Thoughts? Or should we tell our client to give up?
