PNM and PNA are RealPlayer 5.0 protocols and used with 5.0-encoded content.
RTSP (RealTime Streaming Protocol) is a newer protocol designed for and
used by RealPlayer G2 (or 6.0 if you will) and used with G2-encoded
content. RTSP's chief advantage is that it supports SureStreaming. Which,
in case you didn't already know, is essentially a way of combining several
different streams (each at a different bandwidth level...i.e. 28.8modem,
56k modem, ISDN, T-1, etc etc) into one bigger stream and the Player
automatically switches between the streams (while playing) to give you the
best stream that can be run your available bandwidth. Helps a lot in
preventing those damn "network congestion: rebuffering" error messages.
When linking to the file in your code or metafiles....you can use PNM/PNA
on a G2-encoded file...but it will play like a 5.0 file; you lose the
SureStreaming benefits. I don't think RTSP can be used on a 5.0 file...I
haven't tried.
I suppose as long as 5.0 players and content are out there....PNM/PNA will
be around.
