Gordon, 
You should also check for these other common problems with capturing sound 
and video.
1. Hardware installed, but devices not created (see 
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt and "man mknod")
2. Insufficient permission on devices.
3. Video or audio drivers not loaded (assuming you compiled the drivers as 
modules). Use "lsmod" to display the currently loaded drivers. 
and finally ...
4. Device in use. It sounds like you might have a process that is already 
using your sound card. Have you tried running "fuser /dev/dsp"?
As for the server problems - it's best to always verify with a live to file 
encode that you are getting audio and/or video first. Have you successfully 
used this same server in the past? By nothing do you mean that the 
RealPlayer connects successfully and then just plays black, or that the 
RealPlayer doesn't connect at all? Does the RealServer admin pages show the 
RealProducer connection?
