Subject: Vintage Tape Capture Problem
Greetings to all:
I have been using the ATI All-In-Wonder Pro capture card with good
results for almost a year, but recently, some historic black and white
video tapes - graciously converted from reel-to-reel to VHS format
by Sony Corp. - will not produce a screen image to capture.
The original tapes were at least 25 years old and faded, however the
sound tracks remained surprisingly clean. The VHS tapes play OK
on my living room VCR and TV, but produce only a white screen on
the computer. I can capture audio only, not even a vague image
shows up. I have tried 3 different VCRs and all produce acceptable
(but faded) images on the living room TV, but only a white screen
on the computer. I have also tried to capture to several different
software programs including Real Producer and Microsoft Encoder
all with the same result - no image.
ATI has never encountered this problem. I assumed that a minimum
luminosity was needed to actuate the capture circuitry, but ATI says
no such minimum standard exists, any image the VCR picks up,
should be captured.
One final zinger: if the capture setting is changed from the NTSC to
PAL, the image shows up bright and clear, and can be captured,
but of course, the image is chopped in half by the mismatched
standards.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone with incite into this
phenomenon.
Thanks for listening
Joseph Tiraco
