From: "Andy Covell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Virtual Town Meeting ;-( I'm a pretty heavy user of Real Networks technology. We use it at the Syracuse University School of Management and I use at the web site Ive set up to explore technology and promote my new book - DIGITAL CONVERGENCE: How the Merging of Computers, Communications, and Multimedia is Transforming Our Lives. I'm normally a lurker on this list. I thought some of you might be interested in exploring the issues that surround *appropriate use* of digital convergence technologies such as streaming media. President Clinton used streaming media (MS not Real, I guess) earlier this week to engage the citizenry in a virtual town meeting. I heard it was far from a raging success, as has been the case with other "live broadcasts" (remember the Victoria Secret lingerie show?). >From my point of view, the strength of this technology is in on-demand applications for smaller audiences. Not real-time broadcasts for mass audiences (we've got analog television for that). I sent President Clinton an email explaining this and I put together a video message for him as well. You can check out the email message and the video at http://www.digital-convergence.com (click on "Commentary"). I invite any of you who may agree or disagree to offer your comments via an .rm file as well (straight audio would be fine - that will keep it simple). You can send it to me as an email attachment. If it's well thought out and well done, I'll gladly post it on my site. -- Andy Covell - [EMAIL PROTECTED] / (315)443-3054 Director of IT - Syracuse University School of Management Author of - DIGITAL CONVERGENCE: How the Merging of Computers, Communications and Multimedia is Transforming Our Lives < http://www.digital-convergence.com > ******************************************************* The RealForum is an email discussion group focused on using RealNetworks products.
