Subject: cross-platform issues with lengths of filenames ??

As the lead RealAudio developer here at Yupi Internet Services, it's my
responsibility to develop the proper procedures for the creation and
organizing of all content, and I have a particular concern regarding the
lengths of filenames, and how these files might be handled on the MAC.
Typically, whenever I create a clip, be it audio or video, I name my files
using the following format:

artist_name_song_name.rm

This seems to work best, and makes it easy for folks to locate specific
clips on our network as needed. However, in many instances, these filenames
end up being incredibly long, and I'm a bit worried that the MAC version of
the realaudio player might choke on them. I know that there's a limitation
on the MAC platform in regards to the lengths of filenames, whre filenames
that exceed a certain length become totally invisible, -- though I'm not
certain as to whether or not this applies to files that are handled by
realplayer or not. Does anyone here know ? If this limitaiton applies to
realaudio/video files as well, can this problem be overcome by simply
shortening the names of the RAM or SMI metafiles?

On a similar note, .. are there any other characters that I should avoid
from using when naming my realaudio/video files and metafiles, to ensure
that all SMIL markup is interpreted and executed properly accross platforms?
[ So far, I've been refraining from using spaces, apostrophes and hyphens,
.. just to be on the safe side. ]

Thank you,
