Jeff,
We are behind a firewall, which blocks the <EMBED> tag, which you use to
embed the RealPlayer in the Web pages. Therefore, none of the 11,000
employees at the FDIC who have RealPlayer G2 can view any of the videos on
your website (or any other website that uses the <EMBED> tag to embed the
RealPlayer in the Web pages.
The alternative is to use a link to bring up an external RealPlayer outside
of the browser, rather than embedding it in the Web page. Most websites
(perhaps 85-90% of sites I've seen) use the external RealPlayer, but there
seems to be an increasing number of sites that embed the RealPlayer in the
page. I suspect that the FDIC is not the only place where the firewall
blocks the <EMBED> tag. Their firewall does not block the external
RealPlayer because a link to open RealPlayer external to the Web page uses
the syntax <A HREF="myfile.ram">My Media</A> rather than the <EMBED> tag.
I think this is a general issue that site designers and streaming media
producers should be aware of. Websites that do not provide a link to an
external RealPlayer eliminate many potential viewers of their media who are
behind corporate firewalls. Perhaps ironically, these are just the people
who have the high bandwidth available to view high quality streaming media.
