Subject: RE: Quality of Optibase
Eric,
I currently use the Optibase MPEG1 card with the Digital Bitcasting MPEG add
on to my Real Servers. The Digital Bitcasting add on enables me to stream
MPEG1, MP3, and Mpeg2 to locations on campus using the network for transport
and the Real Player at the client side. To encode the MPEG1, I use the
Optibase MPEG1 cards. The MPEG1 cards work great for both live and canned
MPEG videos. I have recently purchased the MPEG2 upgrade from Digital
Bitcasting and will be looking at purchasing MPEG2 encoder and decoder cards
for specialized locations located on campus and for DVD Rom creation in the
near future.
I have been very pleased with the quality of encodes that I am getting from
the Optibase cards. However, I am beginning to look at DV cards that can
output Mpeg1 and 2 as I have purchased 3 DV cameras to be used by professors
and staff to create content to be placed on the media server. By using a DV
capture card, I will be able to use firewire direct from the camera to the
computer and will not lose quality in the transfer.
You should contact JP Monnin with Digital Bitcasting at 978.745.7144 for
information on the Optibase card and on their add on to the Real Server.
Hope this helps.

Can someone please tell me something about Optibase's MPEG technology and if
it's worth a damn. Is Real at all involved with them?
