I just came across a new portable recorder that looks like it'll be
incredible for field audio acquisition, from Digigram and Nagra, called
the RCX 220. The approximate weight is less than a pound (450 grams) and
the size is 7.4" x 3.15" x 1.1", with balanced audio inputs, the ability
to record more than three hours of 128 Kbps MPEG audio on a single flash
RAM PC Card, and a USB interface. Given Digigram & Nagra's pricing, the
RCX 220 is likely to be very expensive, but for the right applications,
it may well be worth it. The specs and a picture are at:

and I think that Digigram is aiming at a release around the time of NAB
in April, 2000.
