Mac Internet Explorer appears to come pre-configured with .smi mapped to =
ShrinkWrap Mounted Image. Thus, unless this association is removed with =
the helper apps. A user must remove the association to make the .smi file =
association to the Real Player.=20

As far as I can tell, this occurs because RealPlayer creates a file
association that IE 4.5 doesn't deal with well.  Specifically, if you
change the SMIL association so that it only applies to .smi and NOT .smil,
all seems to work well.  This will be bugged.
