Is it possible to do the same thing in IE (5 & up) using JavaScript instead
of VBScript?
If so, are there any examples of this?

It's even easier in IE. All you need to do is create an object using the
<OBJECT> tag and name it and add some VBScript to handle the events.
For instance,
<object
id="MyRealPlayer"
classid="clsid:CFCDAA03-8BE4-11cf-B84B-0020AFBBCCFA"
height="140"
width="280">
<param name="SRC" value="rtsp://myserver/myclip.rm">
<param name="AutoGotoUrl" value="false">
</object>
<SCRIPT language="VBS">
Sub MyRealPlayer_OnAutoGotoUrl(byVal url, byVal target)
// do something here
End Sub
</SCRIPT>
