The differences are rather technical and detailed, but the basic problem is everyone has interesting ideas and limited money/time. They have to spend their time/money on what makes them happy, ie. realizing their ideas.
For a time being, that means fragmentation; but after a while there will be a consolidation where the "right" ideas win out. reX took SLUDP, and used the generic message to add ogre meshes and python scripting. 3Di modifies SLUDP to send Irrlicht meshes. Tribal I have no idea. Legacy reX also added separate Auth and Avatar servers, but they're deprecated. Taiga will use Cable Beach to add OpenID logins, and WebDAV for inventory.
