Hello Evan, since this mailing list has not received a post that explains the current status of the realXtend technologies, I thought to give a status update, for anyone interested out there. I think this post is about 7 months overdue (and should not be me writing it), and is a bit off-topic of your post, but the context was slightly clouded to me, so I feel the need to clarify.
While there might be someone lurking on this mailing list, who might be able to answer (please do if you know a solution to Evan's question), the current situation is the following: - the most recent commit to Naali codebase was in March of 2011. - the most recent commit to Taiga codebase was in February of 2010. - the most recent release of Taiga (0.2.0 used OpenSim 0.6.9 iirc) is several versions behind the most recent OpenSim version (seems to be 0.7.2 currently). - the most recent commit to reXviewer codebase was in September of 2010. - the development of both Naali and Taiga (and the old reXviewer) have died out completely among the realXtend companies. I don't know of anyone inside or related to realXtend who writes code on top of these platforms (or even uses them). There are no plans to make new releases of these platforms. - most of the people who developed the Taiga server have moved on to different work places even, and I don't know if they follow this mailing list anymore. People knowledgeable with Taiga internals might be hard to catch here. The bottom line is that for the purposes that the realXtend companies wanted to develop realXtend technologies towards, OpenSim/Second Life, and therefore Naali and Taiga were deemed inadequate. The way that system was architected, it became clear that OS/SL is not the platform that solves the challenges realXtend developers are facing. Currently, every developer inside realXtend has migrated to the Tundra platform, which is a ground-up development that does not share any legacy or history with OpenSim or Second Life. It it a completely separate platform for different purposes, and should not be compared 1:1 against SL/OS. Tundra is not an application intended directly to be consumed by end-users, but it is a development platform for content creators. Most importantly this means is that Tundra does not provide a "virtual world ecosystem" with grids of worlds or personalized user accounts with personalized content storages, or money transactions. Tundra does not build on top of concepts like region, grid, avatar, user account or inventory. Instead, Tundra is more like your standard 3D engine, but it is integrated with a great scene model, an under-the-hood scene synchronization mechanism and a robust scripting layer that can access the whole guts of the system. We think of Tundra as being the open source alternative to Unity 3D (although I hate to draw that parallel, since their renderer is much better than ours :C ). Tundra has had several stable releases now, the current being 2.1.3. My recommendation to everyone still using Naali or Taiga is to strongly consider these two options: - migrate to use Tundra, because Taiga and Naali are not developed any more. - fall back to stock OpenSim, if Tundra does not match your needs. If you still decide to stick with Taiga and Naali, it's ok, but I really want you to know that the developers themselves have moved forward from those platforms. And also, of course it is ok to post Naali/Taiga -related questions to this mailing list or the realxtend-dev mailing list. Kind Regards, jj (btw, I feel that the wiki should be destroyed of any Naali/Taiga stuff, since that gives a seriously false impression that these technologies are still current, whereas they are not) 2011/10/27 Evan <[email protected]> > I logged into my OpenSim server using the Naali client recently and > found that not all assets that I created with a normal client render. > Most assets do, but not all. > > Textures are misaligned and do not scale to how they were. > > I also went to Evolver and got an avatar for Ogre and tried to import, > unfortunately, this causes the avatar to disappear, forcing me to > reset to defaults. > > Is there something that I should change on the OpenSim server or is it > a Naali issue? > > > Thank you, > > Evan > > -- > http://groups.google.com/group/realxtend > http://www.realxtend.org -- http://groups.google.com/group/realxtend http://www.realxtend.org
