Hi Graham, It's great to hear that the plugin is being updated! I have no =20 complaints about the plug-in - it's just that flash has so much =20 penetration these days, and allows deployment to so many platforms. =20 So many devices already have flash installed, and it's trusted. Flash =20 is available off the shelf in just about every browser, and in mobile =20 devices. Users are familiar with it, so there are very few worries =20 about getting permission to install and use it. Instead of trying to =20 keep up with changes in browser technology, targeting a version of =20 REBOL for flash runtime would automatically provide seamless support =20 for an enormous percentage of the web environment (along with a big =20 chunk of mobile and desktop too) - and that support is only going to =20 improve. I can imagine that a flash/REBOL interpreter might also =20 attract a a whole new crowd of developers :)
If it's possible to create, I'd think it'd be much easier to maintain =20 an installed base of Rebol interpreters in the the browser via flash, =20 instead of targeting each independent browser, even as browser =20 technology changes (let Adobe do the work of adapting their run-time). =20 I think it's safe to say that support for existing versions of Flash =20 probably won't fade away any time in the near future... Maybe those are some potential benefits to think about... Is it even =20 possible to create a Rebol interpreter that runs in the Flash runtime? - Nick ps - One of the things that drove my initial interest in Rebol was the =20 ability to run my scripts on just about any machine. Things have =20 changed since then. In the past, we chose operating systems to run =20 our apps on. Now we choose browsers and devices. I've been playing =20 with openlaszlo lately, and I'm smitten by its ability to compile to =20 flash and dhtml, because I know that just about anyone who wants to =20 run anything I create in it will be able to run those apps =20 immediately. Maybe we'd like to make the issue more complex then =20 that, but that fact is true - between flash and dhtml, I can run =20 laszlo apps on just about any machine, immediately. I'd LOVE to have =20 a flash platform version of REBOL - it would breath a whole new life =20 and usefulness into my favorite tool :) Quoting Graham Chiu <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > > Nick > > What's wrong with the Rebol plugin ( being updated! ) > > On Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 6:25 AM, Nick Antonaccio <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: >> >> Hi everyone, >> >> I'm wondering if RT has ever considered creating a Rebol runtime that >> runs in the Flash plugin?
