Joel, thanks for the ideas and explanations. They are very helpful. I agree that this solution can be effective and more easily implemented than some of the more sophisticated methods, even though it may not be optimal.
I think a further twist could be to make different backgrounds for each of the image files, both for same and different characters. I was told that OCR filters can be used to decipher images.
