Apple and Walnut Sheetcake with Caramel Sauce

2 c. sugar
1/2 c. plus 2 tbsp (1-1/4 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
2 large eggs
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 c. flour
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 lb. golden delicious apples, peeled, cored and coarsely grated
1 c. walnuts, toasted and chopped
Purchased Caramel Sauce, heated

        Preheat oven to dg350. Butter and flour 13- by 9- by 2-inch metal 
baking pan.

        Using electric mixer, beat sugar, butter, eggs and vanilla extract in
large bowl until smooth. Add flour, cinnamon, baking soda, baking
powder and salt, and beat just until blended. Stir in apples then
walnuts. Transfer batter to prepared pan. Bake cake until top browns
and tests clean near center--about 55 minutes. Cool in pan. Cut cake
into 12 squares and serve with warm Caramel Sauce and ice cream if
desired.
