Pet Food Recall ~ Homemade food recipe's With the latest dog food fiasco of many well known and supposedly top of the line dog foods being recalled, many subscribers/members are up in arms about what to feed their dogs. I fed my show dogs Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet and Max Pro - seeing them on this list after the recent recall of Diamond Dog foods has me concerned as well. The idea of dogs that are euthanized at shelters being rendered and put back into the food they eat ( see above Meat by-products ) have many people sick and scared at the poisons they are feeding their beloved pets. A friend raises dairy cows and sells milk and I know that if a cow is given an antibiotic, the milk is not fit for human consumption for 6 weeks. Scary, isn't it? Dogs that are put down - basically poisoned are rendered and fed back to your pets. What can you do if you don't trust the food your dogs are eating? Making the decision to make your own dog food creates another dilemma - most don't want to feed the BARF diet - fearing the raw diet and it's inherent obvious problems as well. Though many have fed BARf with no problems, I have recently read posts that a dog vomiting up chicken bones has the owner concerned with her BARF diet that includes raw chicken.
So, with a little searching I have found three recipes that are cooked and gives flexibility of making in advance so that you aren't having to cook for family and dogs both. Since I cook and bake for my dogs on a regular basis - I think if you were to spread the first recipe thinly on old cookie sheets - and bake in a low oven of 250 to 300 - I think you could create your own "dry" dog food for your dogs. Just break the hardened food into bite sized pieces. I think you would have to refrigerate this dry food, but still it would give you the convenience of dry through out the week. If anyone gives this a try - let me know. Home Cooking - Dog Food Recipe Approx. 5 lbs of ground beef or chicken 1 lb of organ meat (optional) 3/4 cup olive oil 4-5 cloves garlic 32 cups water 8-10 cups processed veggies (various) (carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, bean sprouts, potatoes, sweet potatoes, red peppers, spinach, beets, lettuce, tomatoes, etc.) NO ONIONS 2-3 cans kidney beans (optional) 1/2 molasses (optional) 42-45 oz oatmeal (quick cooking oats) Eggs can be added to boost protein In a large 24 qt pot brown ground meat, add canola oil and garlic. When well cooked, add water. Bring to boil, then add veggies that have been processed, (frozen or canned veggies will work too). Use dried kidney beans and soak them the night before preparing a batch of food. While cooking the meat have the beans in another pot cooking them. Once cooked, they are added to the above mixture. Next, the oatmeal is added Frequent stirring is necessary at this point as the mixture will stick. Remove from heat, cool and put into containers. You can occasionally add pumpernickel bread and some times substitute brown rice for some of the oatmeal. Will feed three boxers for a week. Cost is approximately $20 The only problem I see with the above recipe, is finding the 24 quart pot to cook it in. Natural Dog Food - Dog Food Recipe 1-2 cups rolled oats 1/4-3/4 lb of raw organ meat 1 tblsp honey 1 tblsp rosemary powder 1 tsp bran 1 tsp wheat germ 1 tsp cod liver oil 1 tsp cold pressed safflower oil 1 teaspoon bone meal powder 1 tsp angivida yeast 1 tsp kelp powder 1 tsp apple cider vinegar 1/4 tsp of Vitamin c powder 1 vitamin capsule of Biotin 1 vitamin capsule of Vitamin E Handful of finely chopped raisins Handful of alfalfa leaves 1 heaping tablespoon of veggie mix Veggi Mix: 6-8 carrots 1/4 bag of spinach 6-10 individual cloves 1 container alfalfa sprouts Finely puree in a food processor. This mixture keeps well up to 2 weeks. Soak oats approximately 2 hours with enough water to cover; the amount of oats depends on the size and activity level of the dog. Add raw meat; again the amount of meat will depend on the dog. Add all ingredients; mix well. Store in ziploc bags. Rice & Meat Mania - Dog Food Recipe 1/2 cup of either hamburger, ground pork (cooked all the way through), ground chicken, ground turkey, or liver 4 cups rice 1 cup vegetables - choose 1 or more of either sweet potato, regular potato, green beans, carrots, or spinach 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 2 cloves garlic Boil all ingredients together in a large pot. Be sure that if you used pork, it is cooked all the way through. *OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS FOR VARIETY* Noodles. Use all the ingredients above, except you boil 1 pound of noodles separately. Mix noodles in with all other ingredients when the ingredients are ready to serve. Italian and Chinese noodles work best! --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Access the Recipes And More list archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/recipesandmore%40googlegroups.com/ Visit the group home page at: http://groups.google.com/group/RecipesAndMore -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
