NEWS IN BRIEF Rockabilly Singer Janis Martin Dies Tue. September 04.2007 5:48 PM EDT
Janis Martin, who was billed as the Female Elvis in the 1950s, died Monday (Sept. 3) from complications of cancer. She was 67. Regarded as the first female rockabilly singer, Martin was discovered as a teenager by RCA executive Steve Sholes, and in 1956 she recorded in Nashville with Chet Atkins. Her first single, "Will You, Willyum," launched her pop music career and led to several high-profile TV appearances, but she retired within a few years to raise a family. At the time of her death, she was still a popular draw in Europe and had several rockabilly festival dates booked. Shooter Jennings Covers Dire Straits' "Walk of Life" Tue. September 04.2007 5:48 PM EDT The first single from Shooter Jennings' new CD, The Wolf, will be a cover of Dire Straits' "Walk of Life." "I've loved this song since I was a kid, but when I actually read the lyrics, I was fascinated by the line, 'he do the song about the sweet lovin' woman, he do the song about the knife,' because it's a struggle that I can relate to as a musician," Jennings said. "Hopefully this song will make people let their guards down, and it will open the door to the rest of the album. Then the more personal songs I wrote will speak for themselves." The Wolf will be released on Oct. 23 on Universal South Records. "Walk of Life" will be released as a single on Sept. 17. Suzy Bogguss, Patty Scialfa Release New CDs Tue. September 04.2007 5:48 PM EDT Suzy Bogguss and Patty Scialfa each released new albums on Tuesday (Sept. 4). Bogguss' Sweet Danger (Loyal Duchess) was recorded in Nashville and New York City with jazz and pop producer Jason Miles. The album includes a cover of Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now," a favorite song of her son, Ben. Scialfa's Play It As It Lays (Columbia), is influenced by soul music and the Memphis sound. Scialfa enlisted several members of the E Street Band to appear on the album, including husband Bruce Springsteen, Nils Lofgren and Soozie Tyrell.
