Townes Van Zandt to Receive Americana Award

Songwriter Townes Van Zandt will be remembered with the President's Award by 
the Americana Music Association during their annual awards show on Nov. 1
at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. The award will be accepted by Van Zandt's 
friend, songwriter Guy Clark, who will perform one of Van Zandt's songs
in tribute. Emmylou Harris, who recorded Van Zandt's "If I Needed You" and 
"Pancho and Lefty," has also been added to the list of performers for the awards
show. The Hacienda Brothers, Elizabeth Cook, the Avett Brothers and Ricky 
Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby will also perform.

Joe Nichols Marries in Savannah, Ga.

Joe Nichols married Heather Singleton on Sunday night (Sept. 9) in a 
traditional wedding at the historic Whitfield Chapel in Savannah, Ga. The 
candlelit
ceremony was attended by family and close friends. The couple will live in 
Nashville. "Heather and I have known each other since we were 18 years old,
and I can honestly say I fell in love with her the first day I?saw her," 
Nichols said.?"The saying 'timing is everything' is so true with us. I have 
never
been happier." Nichols released a new CD, Real Things, last month.

Flatt & Scruggs, Hank Williams Jr. Honored as Songwriters

The Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Foundation announced this year's Hall of 
Fame inductees on Monday (Oct. 10). Flatt & Scruggs and Hank Williams Jr.
will be inducted in the songwriter/artist category. Two artists rather than one 
will be inducted due to a tie in the voting process. Bob DiPiero ("American
Made") and Mac McAnally ("Old Flame") will enter in the songwriter category. 
Gospel music's Dottie Rambo will also be honored with a special induction
at the direction of the Foundation's board. The five writers will be formally 
inducted at a Nashville ceremony on Oct. 14.

Carrie Underwood's "So Small" Makes Digital History

Carrie Underwood's "So Small" enters Billboard's digital song chart at No. 6 
this week, with 70,808 downloads. The song has earned the greatest first-week
sales of any country airplay single in the history of the digital chart. 
Underwood's rendition of the Pretenders' "I'll Stand by You," recorded for a 
charity
episode of American Idol, remains the best-debuting digital track by a country 
artist. "So Small" will be featured on Underwood's new album, Carnival Ride,
due Oct. 23.

Taylor Swift's CD Certified Gold in Canada

Taylor Swift's self-titled debut album has been certified gold in Canada, for 
sales of 50,000 units. Swift is currently touring in Canada with Brad Paisley,
with five dates scheduled in September and six dates planned for October. 
Swift's album was distributed in Canada on independent label OpenRoad 
Recordings,
which licensed the album from Big Machine Records in Nashville. Her album has 
remained at No. 1 on the U.S. country chart for six consecutive weeks and
has been certified platinum for shipments of 1 million units.

Ricky Skaggs, Whites Record Gospel CD

Ricky Skaggs and the Whites have recorded their first album together, Salt of 
the Earth, which will be released Sept. 25 on Skaggs Family Records. Lead
vocals are shared between Skaggs, his wife Sharon, sister-in-law Cheryl and 
father-in-law Buck. Skaggs' band, Kentucky Thunder, performs on the album as
well. The gospel project includes hymns such as "Farther Along" and "Blessed 
Assurance," gospel classics like "Wreck on the Highway" and "Wings of a Dove,"
and five new songs.
