Robert W. "Bob" McLean, a Murfreesboro, Tenn., businessman who donated Bill Monroe's renovated 1923 Gibson F-5 mandolin and Mother Maybelle Carter's 1928 Gibson L-5 guitar to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, was found dead in Shelbyville, Tenn., on Tuesday (Sept. 25) of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 60. Politce said a pistol was beside his body when it was discovered Tuesday morning near a church, and a suicide note was also found. At the time of his death, the former stockbroker was involved in multiple lawsuits for allegedly cheating investors out of $20 million and was due to appear in court on Wednesday (Sept. 26) at an involuntary bankruptcy case. An auction of his property will be held to recoup the money he owed investors. At the time of his donations to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 2004 and 2005, Monroe's mandolin and Carter's guitar had been on the market for $1.125 million and $575,000, respectively. McLean had also donated generous sums to Middle Tennessee State University and Nashville's Schermerhorn Symphony Center. The Eagles Will Perform on CMA Awards Tue. September 25.2007 5:42 PM EDT The Eagles will make their first appearance on the CMA Music Awards on Nov. 7. The band is currently on the country charts with a new single, "How Long." Later this year, they will release Long Road Out of Eden, with double-CD featuring 20 new recordings. The Eagles have been recognized at the CMA Awards before, when Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles was named album of the year in 1994. As previously announced, the Eagles will perform six shows with the Dixie Chicks at the grand opening celebration of the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles next month. Billy Joe Shaver's Spiritual Album Among New CDs Tue. September 25.2007 5:42 PM EDT Singer-songwriter Billy Joe Shaver released a spiritual album, Everybody's Brother, on Tuesday (Sept. 25), on Compadre Records/Music World Entertainment. Produced by John Carter Cash, the project includes duets with John Anderson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Marty Stuart and Tanya Tucker, the latter of whom joined Shaver for a rendition of "Played the Game Too Long" during a Los Angeles concert on Friday (Sept. 21). ... Other new releases include Steve Earle's Washington Square Serenade (New West), Bettye Lavette's The Scene of the Crime (Anti), Bobbie Nelson's Audiobiography (Justice), Rascal Flatts' Still Feels Good (Lyric Street), Ricky Skaggs and the Whites' Salt of the Earth (Skaggs Family), Randy Travis' Songs of the Season (Word), Gene Watson's In a Perfect World (Shanachie) and Goin' Home: A Tribute to Fats Domino (Vanguard).
