Kitty Wells Honored in Country Music Hall of Fame Exhibit
Mon. April 21.2008 6:02 PM EDT

An exhibit honoring Kitty Wells, country music's first female superstar, will
open at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville on Aug. 15
and will run through June 2009, it was announced Monday (April 21). Wells' 1952
recording of "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" sold more than
800,000 copies and spent six weeks at the top of Billboard's country singles
chart. Her success dispelled the myth that female artists could not sell records
and opened the door for a long line of other superstars including Patsy Cline,
Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton and many others. Wells was inducted into the
Country Music Hall of Fame in 1976.
