Garlic

Garlic offers many therapeutic effects which are due to its volatile factors.
It is
composed of sulfur-containing compounds such as diallyl disulfide, allicin,
diallyl
trisulfide, and a few others. Garlic also contains a high concentration of
trace minerals,
(particularly selenium and germanium), glucosinolates, and enzymes.
Studies have shown that garlic provides protection against atherosclerosis and
heart
disease. The studies revealed that garlic decreases total serum cholesterol
levels while
increasing serum HDL-cholesterol levels. HDL cholesterol, also known as "good"
cholesterol, is a protective factor against heart disease. Studies have also
shown that
garlic is effective in lowering blood pressure.
