Grandma's Chocolate Bread
1 1/2 cups water
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 package active dry yeast
2/3 cup cocoa
2 cups flour
4 eggs
6 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons salt
3 to 4 cups flour
1 cup black walnuts, chopped
1 cup raisins
Mix water, 1 tablespoon sugar and yeast in a plastic bowl. Sift cocoa
and 2 cups flour into yeast mixture. Add next 5 ingredients and mix
gently. Add enough of the 3 to 4 cups flour to make a soft dough like a
sweet bread dough. Mix in the black walnuts and raisins. Let dough rise
once to about double. Punch dough down and form into 4 small loaves.
Place them into small loaf pans and let rise again to about double. Bake
for 20 minutes or until done. Let stand in pan for 5 minutes. Remove
from pans and let cool on a rack. After completely cool, frost all over
with icing except for the bottom. - Bernie, MI
I would have to say that one of my more memorable dining experiences
dates back to when I was in college in Oregon. Around midnight and a tad
on the cool side and a light rain, as I recall. The two of us, sitting
on a bridge somewhere in downtown Portland, Oregon, eating fresh cold
Dungeness crab on the butcher paper wrapper on our laps. Salt and pepper
I had scored from some drive-through, a box of saltine crackers and a
couple cold beers. Throwing the shells out the window of the beat up
$900 Volkswagen I was driving. It really does not get much better than
that. - Ted Parker, Huntsville, AL
