Southern Fried Okra Slice okra 1/4" thick (about 3 cups) Salt lightly and pepper a little more. Toss in corn meal Heat 1/4 cup crisco in a cast iron skillet. Toss okra into hot crisco and cook on medium heat until lightly browned on both sides. Put skillet into a hot oven (450) for about 15 minutes stirring every 5 minutes.
