APPLE LAYER CAKE
   1/2 cup shortening
   2 cups granulated sugar
   3 egg yolks
   3 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
   2 teaspoon baking powder
   1/4 teaspoon salt
   1 cup milk
   3 egg whites
   Cream
 the shortening with the sugar in a mixing bowl. Beat the egg yolks well and 
stir
them in. Sift the flour with the baking powder and salt; add into the creamed 
mixture
alternately with the milk. Lastly, beat the egg whites stiffly and fold them in.
Bake in three 8-inch greased and floured layer cake pans at 325 degrees for 30 
minutes.
Fill the layers with the following special filling.
