“AUSTRALIA DAY” CELEBRATIONS IN CANBERRA HAVE BEEN MOVED TO THE ABORIGINAL
TENT EMBASSY SITE ON THE LAWNS OF OLD PARLIAMENT HOUSE. THIS IS A DELIBERATE
MOVE TO INVADE WHAT LITTLE SPACE IS LEFT TO GRASS-ROOTS ABORIGINAL PEOPLES
TO PROTEST THE THEFT OF LAND AND DELIBERATE DESTRUCTION OF CULTURE,
SPIRITUALITY AND LANGUAGE. THIS IS A SHAMEFULLY PROVOCATIVE ATTEMPT TO TRY
AND SILENCE OUR VOICES.
WE, ABORIGINAL PEOPLES HAVE BEEN PROTECTING AND NUTURING THESE ANCIENT LANDS
FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS. HOW DARE WE BE EXPECTED TO LIVE LET ALONE RECONCILE
IN THIS WAY AND UNDER THESE OPPRESSIVE AND GENOCIDAL CONDITIONS. ENOUGH IS
ENOUGH. WE HAVE SOLUTIONS TO SOME OF THE SPIRITUAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL
PROBLEMS THAT PLAUGE MAINSTREAM AUSTRALIA AND YET WE ARE DENIED RELIGIOUS
FREEDOM AND SUFFER RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION IN OUR OWN LAND.
WE WILL NOT AND CAN NOT COMPROMISE OUR ABORIGINALITY WHICH IS OUR
SPIRITULAITY, LAW/LORE’S AND CULTURE.
IT IS NOW THE TIME FOR ALL US MOB TO BE STRONG TO COME TOGETHER ON THIS DAY
AND LET THEM KNOW THAT
WE WILL NOT FORGET
WE WILL NOT GO AWAY
WE WILL NOT BE SILENT
WE WILL NOT DIE
WE WILL FIGHT
AND WE WILL SURVIVE
