Refshauge is the Minister but Carr is the one responsible. the same Carr who
refuses to discuss legalised shooting galleries or equalising the gay age of
consent (both Wood Royal Commission recommendations).
Goevrnment by tabloid. God bless the NSW Catholic Labor Right.
My reading of the reaction though is a shift in attitudes in the community and
with commentators. even brian watters was defending the existence of the needle
exchanges. the shift seems to be a recognition that if you remove the needles
the rate of blood bourne diseases shoots up. the rhetoric is now about addicts
always being referred to treatment, which would be fine if the treatment
existed.
disaster could come quickly. that's not a beat up. when they removed the
exchanges in vancouver last year the HIV rates shot up.
the people running those services were very sloppy though, they shouldn't have
left themselves open, as they obviously have.

this is a little bit alarmist.
HIV is no longer likely to lead to a quick, early death for all and only a
proportion of those with HepC will develop fatal consequences.
This doesn't diminish the impact of living with these viruses but acquiring them
is not the same as receiving a death sentence.
As a local to the Block one thing struck me about those photos. they was an
aboriginal girl floating in the background who often asks me for silver. I'm
wondering why we don't see a photo of her in the original story? I suspect that
they had lots of photos but picked the one with the white kid (who looked 13).
where's mediawatch when we need it? I'd love to know how the Sun Herald picked
that particular photo.
